Folk Song - The last Saskatchewan Pirate, Captain Tractor

Well, I used to be a farmer and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the C. P. line
But times got tough, and though I tried, the money wasn't there
The bankers came and took my land and told me, 'Fair is fair'
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
'Hire you now?' they'd always laugh, 'We just let twenty go!' (Ha ha!)
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone
I'm gonna be a pirate on the river Saskatchewan! (Arr!)

{Refrain:}
And it's a heave (ho!) hi (ho!), coming down the plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho (hey!) hi (hey!), farmers bar yer doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well, you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I found an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser
I rammed the ship and sank it and I stole the fertilizer
Bridge outside of Moose Jaw spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear, their stomach's are a-quiver
'Cause they know that Captain Tractor's hiding in the bay
I'll jump the bridge, and knock 'em cold, and sail off with their hay

{Refrain}

Well, Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat
He'd follow on the shoreline 'cause he didn't own a boat
But the cutbacks were a-comin' and the Mountie lost his job
So now he's sailing with me and we call him Salty Bob
A swingin' sword, a skull-and-bones, and pleasant company
I never pay my income tax and screw the GST (Screw it!)
Prince Albert down to Saskatoon, the terror of the sea
If you wanna reach the co-op, boy, you gotta get by me! (Arr!)

{Refrain}

Well, the pirate life's appealing but you don't just find it here
I hear in north Alberta there's a band of buccaneers
They roam the Athabasca from Smith to Fort MacKay
And you're gonna lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way
Well, winter is a-comin' and a chill is in the breeze
My pirate days are over once the river starts to freeze
I'll be back in springtime, but now I've got to go
I hear there's lots of plunderin' down in New Mexico

{Refrain}

When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores! (2x)

Wacipi wiwanka

Hi everybody !

How are you ? This evening, I'm very exiting because tomorrow in the morning, I'm going on a very very secret, closed and sacred ceremony on the Carry the Kettle reserve, near Indian Head : the Sun dance, Wacipi wiwanka.
It's a real opportunity, because usually, it's not allowed for the visitors. It's a dance for celebrate the bravery, the summer, the buffalo. And according to all I have read, it's really impressive. But really interesting.
So, maybe, I will explain you, maybe not, if I have to keep the secret. Anyway, I won't take picture because it's sacred.
I'm going tomorrow at 10 am until the night, and come back on Sunday morning, until 4 pm, for a feast. I would like to camp on the reserve, but Linda want to come back for the night. It doesn't matter. I think I'm very lucky. Maybe, I can command my destiny !

Today, I want to show you some pictures about Indian Head and the Shelterbelt Center, the place where I work. So, there is a new photo album !

See you and take care !

First day

P1050520

Une démonstration de vieilles voitures in the downtown of Indian Head. A lot of Chevrolet, but not 2CV ! In the back, it's not a building, it's a big storage, for the train. Every morning, and during the day, we can ear a big BOOOOOOOOONNNNGGG BOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNG BOOOONNNNG. It's the train ! There is no noise, only the train. No bird songs. It's a little upset.

P1050523

A Saskatoon tree

It's an endemic tree, with little purple berries. We can eat these berries, it's like blueberry.

In Lebret, a cross way.

Lebret is a town, in the Quappelle River Valley, 45 km in the north of Indian Head. It's a catholic town and there is an importante community of Métis people. Métis roots go back when the first French came in Saskatchewan. They married with First Nation and had familly. They have their own culture, and a lot of poeple have a french surname. There is a Métis festival in Lebret, the 7th August. One day before I come back home.

Welcome to Indian Head !

Hi everybody !

I'm in Saskatchewan !

I have decided to make a new blog.

I'm sorry, because it's in English, but I don't want to write in French.

It's better for my immersion to think in english !

So I think i don't write long speeches because it's need too much time, so I will post mostly pictures of my trip.

So, welcome and have a good trip !
